Current Meat Chronicle Q02/2008 MEAT INDUSTRY CONCERNED ABOUT ECONOMIC PARTNERSHIP AGREEMENT The Meat Board is familiar with the discussions between the European Union and the Southern African Development Community regarding the establishment of an Economic Partnership Agreement. The next round of negotiations is scheduled for the end of June 2008, in Luanda, Angola. Following a last-minute agreement Namibia initialled an Interim Economic Partnership Agreement text in the middle of December 2007. Beef exports from Namibia to the European Union continued to be exported undisturbed, albeit at a zero tariff rate, which was much in favour of Namibia. The Namibian Government raised some concerns with respect to the initialling of the agreement, which will be addressed in subsequent negotiations. The meat industry, however, felt that these concerns should be quantified in terms of a cost-benefit analysis. The European Union obligingly indicated their willingness to finance the study and the result should be available soon. From the attached figures, which indicate the agricultural output of the different sectors, the value of the livestock sector is approximately three times the size of the other sectors. It is therefore crucial that all efforts be exploited to ensure that the livestock sector continue exporting to the European Union in order to ensure the pursuance of Vision 2030.
