MEAT BOARD ATTENDS RED MEAT ABATTOIR ASSOCIATION CONGRESS IN SOUTH AFRICA

The Meat Board Chief of Classification attended the Red Meat Abattoir Association Annual Congress held in Stellenbosch on 13-15 June 2018. The very relevant theme of the congress this year was the prevention and management of pathogenic / harmful bacterial contamination of the carcass during slaughter. The control of pathogenic bacteria within the food chain has become national interest in South Africa following the recent Listeria  outbreak which caused the death of more than 170 people. The implementation of effective cleaning procedures at slaughter facilities, good hygiene systems, food safety systems and regular evaluation of risks for contamination in the slaughter facility are all important in the combat against bacterial contamination and for the production of safe and wholesome food. A decline in consumer confidence in the slaughter facility and product can cause a significant decline in sales, as was experienced during the said Listeria outbreak in South Africa, where the demand for processed meat products and pork meat cuts declined by 75% and 50% respectively, and pork producer prices declined by 50%.  Meat Safety is non-negotiable, and should be complied with at all times.
