GENERAL INFORMATION

All abattoir operators must register with the Meat Board of Namibia, who is the mandated regulator of controlled products (livestock, meat and meat products)

Why register

According to the Meat Industry Act (No 12 of 1981), section 10 (n), any producer of or speculator in any controlled product (livestock, meat or meat products) must be registered with the Meat Board of Namibia and must comply with the conditions of registration in order to lawfully sell any controlled product (livestock, meat or meat products).

Who qualifies as a producer

  • Any person concerned in the production, manufacture or processing of livestock, meat or meat products;
  • Any person importing or exporting livestock, meat or meat products;
  • In the case of slaughter animals or any by-product thereof, the owner of such animals.

Why must I register as a producer?

  • As mentioned before, in order to lawfully sell livestock, meat or meat products, such person must be registered with the Meat Board of Namibia.
  • To sell means to attempt or agree to sell, to mark with a selling price, to export, offer, advertise, keep, expose, transmit, convey, deliver or prepare for sale, to exchange or dispose of livestock, meat or meat products.

What if I don’t register as a producer?

According to the Meat Industry Act (No 12 of 1981), the Meat Board of Namibia may prohibit the sale of any such controlled product, unless the producer is registered with the Meat Board of Namibia, and complies with its conditions of registration.
